However, we’re 8 days from the end of May, and being in the middle of of the month, looking back less than a week will keep us in May and we don’t need to worry about adjusting months or years.

This calculation does not factor in workdays or holidays (see below!).
Use May's calendar: Begin by identifying 08 May on a calendar, note that it’s Wednesday, and the total days in April (trust me, you’ll need this for smaller calculations) and days until last year (double trust me, you'll need this for larger calculations). From there, count backwards 2 times weeks by weeks, subtracting weeks from until your remainder of weeks is 0.
