Halloween, hallows-eve, the day of the dead, whatever you call it it’s the time of year we celebrate the world beyond the grave and all things spooky.
From today, 2023-04-01 until Halloween, there are 213 days. That means there are 30.43 weeks, 5112.0 hours, and 7.61 months until then. We use this calculation quite frequently on a calendar even if we don’t realize it. Countdown someone’s birthday, anniversary, or special date is important to order gifts on time! If Halloween is special to you, do your future self a favor and set a calendar reminder for a day before and make it repeating. You’re welcome.

On the 31st of October each year, people across the globe don their houses with scary decorations, most notably a hand carved pumpkin more affectionately known as the “Jack-O-Lantern”. Children across the neighbourhood will dress up in costumes (not necessarily scary ones) and knock-on people’s doors asking for sweets and chocolate whilst the adults will head into the nightlife for some monster themed club nights.
You might be wondering where these traditions came from? The Halloween festivities date back to the ancient Celtic times when people would wear costumes and light huge bonfires in order to ward off ghosts and evil spirits in the festival of Samhain. One notable difference is that they celebrated on November 1st. The actual idea of Halloween on October 31st came from the 18th century when Pope Gregory III declared November 1st as All Saints Day and incorporated the Celtic traditions into the night before which he named “All Hallows Eve”. Halloween eventually came to colonial America, most commonly in the southern colonies as the protestant northern colonies restricted the catholic holiday of All Saints Day. Halloween was born when the European customs began to merge with the Native American harvest celebrations. In the late 1800’s America began to create a more community-based Halloween with parties and the famous “Trick-or-Treat”. The fun Halloween tradition of trick-or-treating is so popular that over a quarter of all candy sales in the US are made in the week leading up to Halloween.
The methods of celebrating Halloween have definitely changed, no more do we gather to burn huge fires to ward off the evil spirits that threaten our crops. On your average Halloween you’ll simply decorate your house with a variety of terrifying décor, enjoy a pumpkin spiced latte from your local Starbucks, and take your kids trick or treating. If you are an individual with no children, you will be the one tasked with being the provider of sweets, maybe a financial burden you want to avoid in the economy of 2022, but you can’t lie seeing their happy faces is worth it. Once the kids have gone to bed a lot of young adults will dress themselves up in their own costume and hit the town for some drunken spooky adventures.

There are 151 until Halloween.
In the business world, time until a certain date is complete different. Ten business days is two calendar weeks and one month is only twenty days of production. This changes how much time a corporation working off the traditional 9-5 system of time calculation can actually spend on projects or work. This can add a layer of complexity onto time calculations.
An oversimplification of calculating business days until Halloween is counting the number of total days 213 and subtracting the total number of weekends.
